I'm on a bus!

The Edgewood College athletics teams now have one sweet ride! As part of their contract with Meister Motorcoaches, the Eagles now have a full-size coach bus branded with the Eagle and Dominican Shield logo. Watch for it rolling down a highway near you and honk to let them know you're an Eagle fan!

What's with the weird bar code thingys?

We've been asked more than once this fall, "what is that square bar code thing on your game programs?" Those are QR Codes. Using a smartphone with a QR reading app (we like "QR Droid" and "QR Reader for iPhone") you can scan the code which will direct you to additional information on your mobile device.

For Edgewood College Athletics, we've used them to point to our new Live Video/Live Stats portal or to the cover athlete's bio page on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com. In the future, you might see QR Codes used for special concession stand offers or to direct you to other website features like text message alerts or the photo store. We will try to keep them fun and interesting, so be sure to check the QR Code at every Eagle event you attend.

Breese Stevens press box being built!

Tom Maglio from the City of Madison passed along these pictures of the new Breese Stevens Field press box under construction. JW Industries of Green Bay is building the press box in their factory. It will then be dismantled and shipped to Madison for installation by Joe Daniels Construction. Everyone is very happy at the upgrade to Breese Stevens, but the Athletic Communications staff at Edgewood College is positively ecstatic. Thanks to Tom, the City of Madison and the construction companies for getting it done!

Ben Larson calling games for T-Bones

Ben Larson, one of two regular broadcasters on Edgewood College Eagle athletic events, is working this summer for the Kansas City T-Bones of the independent Northern League. Their season is already underway, so if you miss the soothing sounds of Ben's voice, log-in, listen and pretend he's in the Edgedome or out at Stampfl Field.

Photo Galleries Galore!

It's amazing what you find when you start paying attention.

I posted some photo galleries of our fall sports a few months ago. It was kind of a laborious task because the interface at EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com wasn't very smooth. But then in January, ICS upgraded their photo gallery package and wow! Now we had these amazing looking photo galleries, that were really simple to use.

Still, I was procrastinating on reloading the old galleries from the fall, because I thought it was going to take a long time to search through all those old galleries again. That's when I took a closer look at my new photo gallery upload tool and found a tiny little link that said "Convert Old Galleries." I clicked it and like magic I was able to put the old galleries into the new system one by one. Perfect!

It pays to stick your head out of the ground and look around once in a while!

Here they are for you to enjoy! We'll always add more every time we get new photography.

There are two new photo galleries posted on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com. They are from two of the Eagle baseball team's games in Florida. Check them out and imagine the warm weather and beautiful sunshine, which we'll see here soon. (At least, I still have faith we'll have sunshine soon.)

Cupery loses one record, but gains two more!

Last night at the Edgedome, Deb Cupery (Boomsma) witnessed Megan Scheele move past her on the Edgewood College all-time scoring list, taking over a record which Deb had held for 18 years. No one in the gym realized however that Deb would be leaving the Edgedome with two other records now rightfully credited to her name.

I had several conversations with Deb leading up to the historic day. During one of those conversations Deb remarked that she noticed EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com listed the single game scoring record at 38 points, accomplished by Scheele in the first game of the 2006-07 season. Deb couldn't recall the exact game, but was pretty sure that she had recorded a 46-point game at some point in her career.

I admitted to Deb, that while I was confident that we had her season and career totals correct, our archives had very little information about single games during her playing years of 1987-91. I told her it was entirely possible that she had scored 46 points in a game, and if she could come up with some kind of evidence, like a newspaper article or a box score, I'd gladly amend the records.

Last night, when Deb and her family walked in the door, her mom proudly produced the evidence needed, a newspaper clipping from a February 18, 1989 game against Silver Lake. Not only did the newspaper article confirm Deb's single game scoring record, but it also showed she made 21 field goals in the game, also a new school record.

Deb even handed out an assist to a former teammate who handed her so many assists during their playing days. That same article indicated Ellen Zgonc led the team with 15 assists (undoubtedly many of those to Deb) which is also a new single game record at Edgewood College.

(click article to enlarge)
If you read the article, you'll notice that the headline and article indicates an Edgewood College victory, but the box score indicates the Eagles lost. In fact, the Eagles did lose this game 94-81, which must have slipped past a long-forgotten copywriter. It's nice to know other people can make mistakes too.

The Edgewood College women's basketball single game records have officially been updated. Thanks, Deb, and congratulations!
