Spring Break in Florida!

The Edgewood College softball team spent their spring break in Florida at the Gene Cusic Classic and brought home a record of 6-3. After dropping their first two games, the Eagles won six in a row, their longest win streak since 2008.

The Eagles flew out of Milwaukee and continued a tradition on the ride to the airport from Madison. All freshman picked out a number for their karaoke single and serenaded the team.

After a long week, the team was rewarded with a day off. The Eagles hit the beach and then went out for dinner at Bahama Breeze. There is not enough room in this post for all of the pictures and selfies that were taken, but here are a few samples...

Edgewood College is scheduled to kick off their conference schedule the weekend of March 29 in Illinois. The Eagles play Benedictine University on Saturday and then Aurora on Sunday, March 30. Hopefully the weather will cooperate! Live stats can be found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.

Separated at birth?

The Eagles' Carlene DeCoster (left) and actress Ellen Page (right)
If you attend an Edgewood College softball game this season for the first time you might hear “Here we go, Juno” or “Come on Juno!” from the Eagles dugout. Don’t bother looking at your program. There’s no one named Juno there. Junior Carlene DeCoster (@carlenedecoster) was tagged with the nickname her freshman year that has stuck with her throughout her time here at Edgewood College. Where did it come from?

Have you ever seen the movie Juno with the actress Ellen Page? Well, that is her in the picture (on the right) and this is where the pseudonym all began. DeCoster says you can give the credit to teammate and starting shortstop Jessica Spitzer, who recognized DeCoster’s looks and even voice to be like that of the talented actress. The entire year the whole team continued to call her “Juno” and eventually it stuck.

When asked about the alias, DeCoster replied “If anyone on the softball team calls me Carlene, it is super weird and I feel like I’m in trouble or something. Half the time I don’t even respond to Carlene anymore.”

Would she legally change her name? “I might consider it. I’ve had this conversation with multiple people before. I love the nickname Juno, however, I’m not really sure what my family would think.”

Now this is not just for the softball team only, but it has traveled to school as well. “I would say that a decent amount of the people that I’ve met at school call me Juno and probably half of them think it’s my real name. Since all the softball girls call me that, other people just think it’s my real name.”

Even at a summer waitressing job DeCoster tricked her entire table. “I had a table that was legitimately convinced I was Ellen Page’s twin or something. The crazy lady called me Juno the entire time they were there and she kept pulling up a photo on her phone and creepily holding it up to me and going on about how much I look like her. It was extremely weird.”

Now the next time you head out to Ceniti Park in Verona to cheer on the Eagles, you can join in the cheers as well. Soon enough, you might find it difficult to call her Carlene as well.

A behind-the-scenes look at the Tucson Invitational

The Edgewood College softball team traveled to Arizona to play 10 games in five days at the Tucson Invitational this past week. The Eagles battled hard and even though they did not come away with a win, the team found positives in nearly every game. What fans were not able to see was what happened during the time that was not spent on the diamond. Feel free to catch up with the Eagles and ask them about the trip! In the mean time, this video clip highlights some of the players' favorite moments of the Tucson Invitational...
On Friday, after five straight doubleheaders, the team got to relax at Trail Dust Town which was just a short drive from the hotel. Here are a few of the pictures from before dinner at Pinnacle Peak...
After a long non-conference schedule, the Eagles begin Northern Athletics Conference play on March 30 (weather permitting) as they host Lakeland College for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Live stats and live video can be found at EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.

Hot Corner Chronicles #1

Colleen Joyce, the Eagle Softball third baseman will be checking in from time to time on the Eagles' season. Here is her first entry...

Hey everybody! I am Colleen Joyce; I am a junior from Madison, Wisconsin, majoring in psychology. You will find me on the softball field playing the hot corner over at third base and getting big hits. I can’t wait for the weather to be nice so we can play some more games.

We got back from our spring training trip to Arizona about two weeks ago. We did not do as well as we would have liked but we had a good time and got a nice tan. We started off our season playing the Division III defending national champions, UW-Eau Claire. We finished our trip 4-6.

With having perfect weather every day, we had to make great use of the pool. By the pool there was an orange tree so, some of the girls enjoyed a delicious juicy orange after playing around with it in the pool. One of our great traditions in the pool is chicken fighting. Charli Metcalf and I are STILL the defending chicken fighting champions. It was a tough battle because there was blood drawn and we were down for a little bit but managed to get back up and beat Rachel Elliott and Emily Monson. It was a battle, to win the championship, between the east side and west side Madisonions. One of the best times at the pool was throwing Coach C into the pool while she was laying out.

After going out to dinner one of the vans had to make a pit stop at Walgreens to get something. Coach C and Steph Schafer went in and we wanted to hide the van so they would think we left with out them. Coach JP drives behind the building and parks on the side so we can see their expressions when they come out. But, that was not a good enough hiding spot so we drove to a burger joint and parked behind some bushes thinking they won’t see us…it still wasn’t a good enough hiding spot. So we drove across the street and watched them as they came out. They looked so confused and were looking around for the van. We went and got them but we ended up driving down the street a couple blocks before we could turn around and head back and get them. It was the funniest thing ever. Our van could not stop laughing that whole time.

On St. Patrick’s Day some of the team went with their parents and the rest went go-karting, mini golfing and played arcade games. We had to make go-karting some sort of challenge or race. Monica Humphrey aka MoMoney picked the slow “glumper” car and Emily Monson chose a car where her steering did not work. I had a good car I was 5-6 cars back from the front of our group and I got past all of them and won! We found out that Coach C is not very good at mini golf. MoMoney and I were at the top of the leader board.

Last week MoMoney found out that she made it into nursing school!!!! Way to go!!! As a team we went out to dinner to celebrate.

We have plenty of home games coming up so come out, enjoy the sun and cheer the Eagle softball team on!!!
